The same thing happens to Elephants too in circises everywhere. When Emily M went to Thiland she saw a show where the Elephants had to do lots of hard tricks, like standing on one anouther, how crual! Not all circises treat them bad, especially not in Australia, but I bet they'd still rather be in their natural habitat, at least in zoos they have Spacious enclosures that recreate their natural habitat.
